66-year-old Gbenga Ashiru is said to have died in the early hours of Saturday, November 29, after a long battle with cancer.

According to reports, former Foreign Affairs Minister, Gbenga Ashiru is dead.

The publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu said via Twitter:
“I've received the sad news of the death of Ex-Foreign Affairs Minister OTUNBA GBENGA ASHIRU, 66, in South Africa. May he Rest in Peace!” 66-year-old Ashiru is said to have died in the early hours of Saturday, November 29, after a long battle with cancer

The former minister had reportedly been battling a brain tumour which caused him to be hospitalized for over three month

Bomb blast rocks Kano Central Mosque; many feared dead

Scores of people are feared dead in a bomb blast at Kano Central Mosque, near the Emir’s palace, witnesses and the spokesperson of the Military Joint Task Force in the state, Captain Ikechukwu Eze, have said.

Witnesses said the bomb went off as Muslim faithful prepared for their Friday jumaat prayers, causing serious pandemonium as people ran helter-skelter for dear lives.

The explosion, which went off at about 2 p.m. before the Imam of the mosque, Sani Zahradeen, began his sermon, was said to have been followed by sporadic gunshots.

The number of casualties is not yet known.

Already the police have cordoned off the area while the entire mosque has been deserted.

kills 40 people: sources,

YOLA, NIGERIA- (Reuters) - A roadside bomb tore through a bus station near a busy junction in northeast Nigeria on Thursday, killing 40 people including five soldiers, witnesses and a security source on the scene said.

The security source and witness Abubakar Adamu, a mechanic who narrowly avoided being blown up himself, said the blast set several buses on fire at the Marabi-Mubi junction, in a part of the country plagued by violence linked to the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency.

"There were bodies everywhere on the ground," Adamu said.

The location is about 30 km (20 miles) west of Mubi, a town near the Cameroon border seized last month by Boko Haram militants fighting to carve an Islamic state out of religiously-mixed Nigeria.

It has since been recaptured.

Nigerian authorities, who rarely remark on security developments in the troubled northeast, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

There was no claim of responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on Boko Haram, whose campaign to create an Islamic caliphate governed by sharia law has killed thousands since 2009.

Continuing insecurity is a headache for President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of February 2015 polls in which he is seeking a second elected term in office. He has asked parliament for approval to extend an 18- month-old state of emergency in the northeast.

Two female suicide bombers killed at least 44 people on Tuesday in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, medical officials said.

EU should recognize Crimea as part of Russia – Czech president

Czech leader Milos Zeman has
said that the EU should accept
the fact that Crimea is now part
of Russia, stressing that the former autonomous region won’t return to Ukraine in any foreseeable future.

Zeman described Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s decision to give Crimea to the Ukraine in 1954 as “stupid” in a radio interview.

He also blasted the law of the Ukraine’s state language which deprives the Russian-speaking population of the right to use its language at the state level.

He called this situation “idiotic.”

However, the Czech leader suggested NATO should send its troops if Russia attempts to “annex the eastern part of the country,” as cited by Reuters.

"The moment Russia decides to widen its territorial expansion to the eastern part of Ukraine, that is where the fun ends," Zeman said in a broadcast on Czech public radio.
"There I would plead not only for the strictest EU sanctions, but even for military readiness of the North Atlantic Alliance, like for example NATO forces entering Ukrainian territory," the Czech leader added.

It follows a weekend of pro-Russian protests that are still engulfing eastern Ukraine.

On Monday, protesters in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk have seized the regional department building of Ukraine’s Security Service, local media reported, as cited by ITAR-TASS.
A day earlier, thousands of people waving Russian flags flooded the streets of eastern Ukraine on Sunday. Demonstrators in the cities of Donetsk, Lugansk, and Kharkov seized state offices, while in Donetsk they also demanded an independence referendum.

Since the Crimean referendum and the territory’s accession to the Russian Federation, Western leaders have been expressing theirvoutrage over what they called “annexation” of Crimea.

However, other world powers supported Russia,vwith Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner saying in March that the West’s reaction is about double standards, recalling that “the UN Charter stipulates the right of people to self-determination, which means that this rule should be applied to all countries without any exception.”

She compared the situation in Crimea with that of the Falkland Islands, where a referendum was also held a year ago. The UN did not question the legality of the vote at that time, Kirchner reminded. The conflict over the territory in 1982 led to a war between the UK and Argentina. Buenos Aires lost that conflict; diplomatic relations between the two were restored only seven years later in 1989.

Maiduguri market blast killed 30

Twin blasts today rocked Maiduguri
Metropolitan City killing scores of traders and injuring several people in the troubled Borno State capital, residents said.

One of the blasts, according to witnesses, occurred along the Baban-Layi of the main market around 11.30AM when daily
commercial activities had begun.
Security sources, who pleaded anonymity, told Channels Television that the market bomb was
detonated by a female suicide bomber at the northern flank of the market, while the one on
Baban Layi went off immediately after another suicide bomber blew himself up in an unmarked pickup van five minutes after.

The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Mr.Clement Adoda, who confirmed the incident expressed sadness over the incident, but could
not give an exact casualty figure.

“I cannot give you the exact number of casualties right now, as I am heading towards the blast scenes, but the reports I’m receiving right now as I speak indicates that several people were killed and injured in the sad and unfortunate blast,” said Adoda. The blast scenes, according to him, have already been condoned off by military and police to prevent any further attacks.

However, authorities of Specialist Hospital Maiduguri confirmed to Channels Television that more injured persons are being brought to
the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital for medical attention as several dead bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the hospital.
“We cannot confirm to you the casualty figure because we are still receiving dead bodies, as
the Hilux patrol vehicles of police and military are still bringing in both killed and injured victims” revealed a hospital official.

Asked if felt he was made a scapegoat last season,
Fellaini said: "Yes a little bit. That is a difficult question. It is difficult to answer that."Speaking at an event organised by Manchester United's global partner Nissin, he added: "I didn't lose faith in myself. In football you have to be strong inthe head. The mentality is important and I do have this quality so I can keep going.
"My family helped me through it. I was also in the national team for Belgium at the World Cup and I
played well and the team also played well. For my confidence that was important. I came back after the
summer confident.
"The manager said to me I would have to fight if I wanted to play. I did fight and trained hard and that
was it. When I got my chance I tried to show myself and tried to do my best.
"Last season was a difficult season for me. The World Cup helped me a lot.
The manager of the national team and the players helped me and it was a great experience for everybody."
Fellaini said; his current form is partly the result of recovering his fitness after an ankle injury -- but that there is more to come.
He said: "When you are playing you are always happy. So I am happy at the moment. I have worked hard and will work hard to play every game.

"I am fit now and that is why I am better. When I am super fit I will be better, I am sure. I was injured earlier this season, they said I had to have surgery but I didn't. It was a bad injury but now I am better and I can look forward.
"At the moment the manager is using me as a box-to-box player and I am trying to score a goal."
Fellaini said Van Gaal has brought in a different approach to Moyes which the players had to get used to.
He added: "I agree last season was tough. There was a new manager and it was difficult for all the players
but we have another new manager now with a new philosophy and we have to work hard.
"It is about organisation and keeping the ball better.
You have to close down when you lose the ball. It is a new philosophy.

"When you bring in a new manager you have to wait because it is not easy to bring in a new philosophy
but we are working hard in training. The manager has a lot of meetings to help us improve so we will
see what happens in time."

Two (2) feared dead, 20 injured in stampede at Akwa Ibom new stadium entrance during its

Two persons were feared dead and 20 others injured in a stampede at the entrance of Akwa Ibom International Stadium on Friday during its inauguration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that crowd control was a difficult task in spite of the road blocks mounted some kilometres away from the stadium.
Although the spectators got tickets to enable them access the 30, 000 capacity stadium, the crowd started thronging the stadium about five hours ahead of the scheduled time for
the match.

Confirming the incident, the state
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emem Bassey, told NAN that two unconscious persons were
taken to an undisclosed hospital.
“I was told that two persons have been taken to the hospital; these are perhaps people who were fighting at the gate in their bid to enter the stadium,” Dr. Bassey said.

He said that the third unconscious person, a woman, was revived in the stadium and had started talking.

“It should be expected; this is the first time this is happening, everybody is excited,
everybody wants to enter the stadium.

“We have 150 medical personnel in this place and eight ambulances. All our medical teams are up and doing and all the clinics are manned,” Mr. Bassey said.

NAN reports that the security operatives at some check points were using horse whips and teargas to control the crowd.

Contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Achong, however said, “there was no stampede, there was only crowd control.
We are only controlling the crowd entering the stadium.”

When told that journalists at the stadium reported a stampede, he said, “I’m not aware” and terminated the call.
An international friendly between the
home-based senior national team of Nigeria,
Super Eagles B, and the U-23 National Team of Ghana, the Black Meteors, was fixed to mark the opening of the stadium.

“It is possible football fans were scrambling to enter the stadium to watch the match.

That’s what I heard,” an Uyo resident, who said he was on his way to the facility, said.

The President of Ghana, John Mahama and the Ivorian Head of State, Alassane Ouattara were all expected in Uyo to open the new
edifice.
Apart from Presidents Jonathan, Mahama and Ouattara, a number of governors from across Nigeria are expected, while the President of the Nigeria Football Federation,
Amaju Melvin Pinnick and some Executive Committee members and Management staff arrived Uyo on Thursday evening.

The 30,000 – capacity venue, with a bullet – proof State Box that has 70 seats, has been described by the Vice President of Ghana
Football Association, Fred Crentsil (who was sent by CAF to inspect the venue) as being “among the best you can find anywhere in the world”.

Governor Godswill Akpabio, who is the chief host, is showcasing the majestic facility, which has already been approved by the
Confederation of African Football for the crucial 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier
between Nigeria and South Africa on
November 19, as one of the key
infrastructure he has delivered for the oil-
rich State.

President Goodluck Jonathan who laid
the foundation stone of the Akwa Ibom
Stadium two years ago was on hand to
commission the sumptuous arena yester­
day. Assisted by two serving presidents
of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama and
Côte d’Ivoire’s Alassane Drmane Ouat­
tara, as well as former President of
Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, the president
declared the edifice open at quarter past
six in the evening (6:15pm).
He paid tributes to Governor Godswill
Akpabio, who executed the project in
record time, pointing out governments in
the federation sometimes initiated
programmes, which they were often
unable to finish.
“This has not been the case here. I
therefore commend the governor for the
achievement”. He also pointed out the
significance of Akwa Ibom, being the first
state to host three serving presidents at
the same time on occasion that had
nothing to do with a major political or
economic meeting. The commissioning
preceded the Nigeria versus Ghana
football match.
Ghana’s president in his goodwill
message, deviated to commend the coun­
try on how the Ebola virus was contained
and showed how Nigeria can achieve a
lot if all work together.
President John Dramani Mahama also
spoke as the chairman of ECOWAS,
remarked that the stadium will not just
be a nest for champions of Nigeria, but
also that of West Africa, Africa and the
world.
He hoped that the arena will breed future
