1KG OF CATFISH NOW SELLS FOR 1,800: CATFISH FARMERS REJOICE

In a significant stride towards bolstering the fish farming industry, stakeholders from Rivers State, including fish farmers, representatives from the Central Bank of Nigeria, and feed producers, convened on August 10, 2023. This pivotal meeting was marked by informative lectures on farm management practices, a call for urgent attention from the CAFAN chairman, and the establishment of new pricing standards that brought a breath of fresh air for fish farmers. 

FARM MANAGEMENT PRACTICE TAKEN

The gathering commenced with a series of enlightening lectures on farm management practices, aimed at equipping fish farmers with up-to-date techniques to enhance productivity. Experts shared insights on record keeping, feed optimization, and sustainable aquaculture practices. A State of Emergency Declared:

Amid the presentations, the Chairman of the Catfish and Allied Fish Farmers Association of Nigeria (CAFAN) made a resounding declaration of a “state of emergency” within the fish farming industry. He passionately emphasized the need for increased government attention and support for the sector. This call to action resonated strongly among the attendees, emphasizing the urgency of addressing challenges faced by fish farmers and unlocking the industry’s immense potential.

One of the most anticipated outcomes of the meeting was the establishment of new pricing standards, a decision that was met with palpable excitement by fish farmers. Collaborative discussions among stakeholders led to a unanimous agreement on revised pricing for various fish categories:

for Catfish
Small size (less than 1kg): ₦1500 per kg
Big size (Above 1kg): ₦1800 per kg
Fingerlings: ₦15 each
Juveniles: ₦45 each
Tilapia fish: ₦2000 per kg 
This equitable pricing structure was greeted with enthusiasm, as it promised fair compensation for the efforts invested by fish farmers and encouraged further growth within the industry.
